AFTER THE BURN

As a frequent visitor to Western Australia I’ve always loved the drive south from Perth to Margaret River and beyond down to coastal towns such as Denmark. Along the way we’ve often passed through areas of burnt bushland.

These images are based on the many photographs I have taken and the experience of bright blue skies, black charred tree trunks, red or sandy earth and the specks of green new life. The colours can vary from vibrant to ghostly hues. Stay a few days and the landscape keeps changing. Layering various papers for my chine collé etchings, I aim to capture the layers of hues and the ever-present vibrant skies.

In May 2020, during the Covid-19 crisis, two prints from this series were featured on an online exhibition; Made2020, as the planned real-world exhibition was postponed to 2021 as a result of the lockdown in London.
